Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay Fredric Stanley HIST 3881 Professor James Conway 7 November 2015 Though we Americans, in all of our efforts, feel as if the day of racism is coming to an end, I feel it is merely evolving into a much more subtle approach. Seeing life through the words of Anne Moody in her book entitled, Coming of Age in Mississippi, shows that racism, even back then, is treated with remedies versus a cure. After the many anti-discrimination legislations passed as well as activist groups shedding light on all of the significant differences and injustices that African Americans face, one would think that by now racism would be far behind us here in America. After a close review of Anne Moody s life, her growing up†¦show more content†¦Anne Moody saw the true hideousness of racial violence shortly after beginning high school. Emmet Till was killed by a group of white men for merely whistling and showing interest in a white woman. Anne was surprised at how unaware she was to the things happening around her. I don t remember if anyone was murde red, but back when I was in high school it was almost as if whites viewed it to be cardinal sin for an African American male to be with a white woman. This too was a time where I saw the true reality of what it was to be an African American versus a White American. Anne s mother informed her to continue throughout life as if nothing happened but understandably she couldn t. While working Anne could not focus and her rage began to display. Mrs. Burke made an attempt to talk to Anne concerning Emmet Till s death but Anne acted as if she didn t know what Mrs. Burke was speaking of. Mrs. Burke told her that that is what happens when black people step out of place with whites. It was at that point Anne began to fear for her life now learning the true outlook of being an African American. I see on a daily basis where African Americans accept injustice and move on with life as if it doesn t matter. Instead of standing in the gap for what could very well hit home African Americans tend to t urn a blind eye to the corruption and cruelty we face. So many times within the work force we, African Americans, are reminded where we stand in the eye of the Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi By Anne Moody Nicholas Allen History 109-003 21 April, 2016 Paper 3 In the book Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody, it shows about a Moody growing up in Mississippi poor and in the during Civil Rights era. Throughout the book it shows the experiences that Moody went through growing up and how they affected her views on the Civil Rights movements. First, during her childhood the experiences of growing up as an African-Americans in the southern limited Moody to what she can achieve in life. Then in the teenager years of Moody life the experiences are more against the hatred the white people had against the black community, also in her 20s her past experiences helped her get involved with Civil Rights programs. Finally, with her involvement in the Civil Rights movements affected her way see different views and resolves compared to other people. In the book, Moody’s experiences throughout her life affects her views and resolves during the Civil Rights movements and her involvement in the movement. To start with, in the Moody’s early childhood life she lived on a plantation house with her family and other families were there they experienced a limit to what she can achieve because of the lack of jobs and the terrible quality of jobs the black community. The book itself consists of 30 chapters segmented into her childhood, high school, college and the movement where she ends up becoming a civil rights movement activist during her time in college. Throughout her young days she realized the existing differences of race existed within the community and tried to find the reasons for it especially on the African Americans acceptance on the situation. As a bright kid and later on an experienced woman with distinct intelligence of her time, Anne Moody made her experiences of frustration, alienation and injustice as major issues of her work. These frustrations of her includes the frustration in her family especially with her mother’s acceptance of the situation, white’s brutal dominance imposed on the blacks, brainwashing and the overall injustice and rights African Americans had compared to the whites. She was born Essie Mae Moody in 1940, but would change her name to Anne in high school. Essie Mae grew up in Wilkerson County, a very rural county in Mississippi that suffered from extreme racism and poverty. The book is 424 pages long and the chapters flow together in chronological order from her childhood to her college days as a member of NAACP and SNCC and CORE (Coalition for the Organization of Racial Equality). Anne Moody has said that when she wrote her autobiography, she considered herself an activist, not a writer. Today, the book is assigned in literature courses, as well as history and social science courses. Of all the tens of thousands of autobiographies, social exposà ©s, and historical accounts, Coming of Age in Mississippi is one of the few still taught today. They were poor and had lots of family to feed. Many of the kids like Essie Mae had to work for a very low pay but it helped them not starve. It made us see later in the book of all the killings of blacks that were happening. They were all too afraid to speak up and do something about it, but not Essie Mae. During her time trying to help out and win blacks their freedom a lot happened that is still talked about today. The author did not include race, poverty, labor issues, and economic problems they were facing. The author might have had a reason why she left all these things out.
